How many watts a heated floor uses
Electric underfloor mats are rated at roughly 12 watts per square foot. A 100 square foot bathroom is therefore about 1,200 W; a small ensuite is 300 W and a large open-plan floor reaches 3,000 W.

Worth knowing
- Cost scales directly with floor area, which is why heated floors are affordable in a bathroom and expensive across a whole house.
- A programmable thermostat matters more here than anywhere else. Floors have high thermal mass and take an hour to respond, so heating on a schedule beats heating on demand.
- This is resistance heat, so it carries the same one-for-one cost as any electric heater. Treat it as comfort rather than as a heating strategy.
